I was feeling pretty nervous for the whole of yesterday, just couldnt sit still. I am in the WSC's RSP (regular service project) Youth, and yesterday was our 1st volunteering session at a particular Boys Home. Our purpose is to go down to the home once weekly, chat with the boys there, play some games and do some reading with them. I joined with my friend but she cant make it for the session yesterday so i was pretty afraid of going alone. Though i attended a briefing at the home once with the fellow volunteers and also had a bbq with them last holiday, i still felt nervous cos i do not know them well yet. I thought it was very scary, going alone without knowing my fellow volunteers well and also because i do not know what to expect at the home. But i was wrong... read on to find out... haha

All the volunteers met up and had dinner before going to the home together. Well, i must say i enjoyed the session there. As it was the 1st session, we played some simple games (the improvised whacko using a tennis ball, dog-and-bone) to get to know both the boys' and also our fellow peers' names. Okay, i know u people must be thinking, these games are so childish... but some of the boys there are pretty young so we cant play too difficult games as well. After 2 games, we split up into smaller groups of 2 volunteers and 2 boys each. Then each group just find a spot, sat down and chatted with the boys and tried getting to know them better. Not too bad... but i think i must think of more topics to talk about for future sessions. Oh yah, there are also a lot of rules for us volunteers when we go there. Cannot wear sleeveless, skirts.... must wear dark-coloured t-shirts, jeans and sandals... then i forgot to clean off my nail polish... oops... there are also topics which we are not allowed to discuss with the boys, like their family, why they ended up in the home.... very sensitive topics... cannot give them our numbers, address as well... cannot really talk about them, but i didnt mention any names so should be alright.

I realised they are quite different from you and me... we asked them to write down their Xmas wish (things they want, below $15) and the club will buy for them. Their wishes are really very simple. Some wanted to eat fastfood, some wanted stationeries... very trivial things to us. If any of you are interested in doing such volunteer work, i seriously encourage you to do so. I think we feel happy helping others and sometimes there are lessons which we can actually learn from these people.

After the session, some of us went for supper. It is supposed to be a culture, whereby all volunteers go for supper together after each session. I was hesitating cos i was already late for IH training and had to rush back but i decided to go in the end. After all, it was the 1st 'chill-out' and everybody will get to know each other better, so i dont want to miss out on that. I like my fellow volunteers very much, think they are very nice people. Unlike some other ccas i joined, we will just go our own ways after meetings and events. Never will we go for supper or stuff like that. We had a lot of fun during the supper... full of nonsense, suaning... real nice feeling... They are also very 'onz' people, already planning a 'ton-ning' session next week and a post-Xmas bbq. Pretty cool eh... i do look forward to next thursday... hee...
